A GIF is capped at 256 colors and stores every frame, so it can be large and look banded. The same clip as MP4 or WebM is usually much smaller, shows full color, and plays smoothly inline the way any video does.

You keep the original frames, their timing, and the original size. Video is compressed, so a single frame paused and zoomed in can look a little softer than the GIF. In motion the clip looks the same, and color gradients usually look smoother because they are no longer capped at 256 shades.

A GIF loops on its own. An MP4 or WebM does not loop by default, but it will once the player is set to repeat. On a web page, add the loop attribute to the video tag; in most players, turn on repeat.
